Week 6: How can countries like the US help countries such as India to shift to a safer, more sustainable, renewable energy source?

Assisting in a global shift towards renewable energy in developing countries.

As part of working towards an overall greener future, it is important to assist other countries in their efforts to address their contributions to climate change. Climate change is a global challenge that requires the fostering of more sustainable energy practices in developing countries as well as developed countries. Helping countries such as India to use more sustainable energy sources would contribute to a more equitable global society. Solutions to this question include investing in developing countries, technology transfer, and policy. Financial support through investing in renewable sources for developing countries would help them overcome the cost barriers that the infrastructure demands. This can be difficult as these countries' political and economic challenges may make it difficult to use these funds effectively. Technology transfer is another solution that would allow the infrastructure needed for renewable energy technology to be useful to developing nations. This would provide them with the technology necessary to use sustainable energy independently. A problem that comes with sharing technology is that it cannot be guaranteed that the technology will be used effectively, as sharing the knowledge necessary may become another issue. Implementing policies is another way to incentivize the use of renewable energy. Policies can be a good guide to encourage its use. Problems that face policy-making are that they can be hard to implement, and once implemented, it may be economically difficult to follow these policies.

An important gap in knowledge that needs to be filled in order to help developing countries adopt more sustainable practices properly is understanding and working with and understanding the society and culture. To create effective renewable energy sources, social differences need to be understood and accounted for. It is necessary to understand social contexts in developing countries so that energy sources can be tailored to their needs.
